Lijiang is a UNESCO old town of canals, willow trees and grey-tiled roofs, with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain hanging over it like a stage backdrop. It's genuinely beautiful — and thoroughly commercialised, so the trick is walking ten minutes past the souvenir shops until the crowds thin and the real hush returns.
