Dubrovnik's old town is a walled, car-free jewel: limestone lanes polished to a shine by centuries of feet, baroque churches, and terracotta roofs stacked against a impossibly blue sea. Walk the city walls and the whole thing unfolds below you like a model. It's ravishing — and it's also a victim of its own beauty, packed by cruise-ship day crowds and Game of Thrones fans (this was King's Landing). Come at the right hour and it's magic; come at midday in August and it's a hot, heaving crush.

✓The walled old town is genuinely one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful — a UNESCO showpiece you can circle on its ramparts.
✓Walking the 2km of medieval city walls, with the roofs on one side and the Adriatic on the other, is unforgettable.
✓The swimming is superb — ladder off the rocks below the walls or take a boat to Lokrum island straight from the old port.
✓Sunset from the sea walls or the Srđ cable car, with the town glowing gold, is worth the trip on its own.

•Overtourism is severe — when several cruise ships dock, the main street (Stradun) becomes a slow, shoulder-to-shoulder river of people.
•It's expensive for Croatia: old-town restaurants, drinks and the wall ticket are priced for the captive crowd.
•It's small — the walled town is quickly 'done', and there's less depth here than in a living city like Split.
•Summer heat plus stone-radiated warmth plus crowds can be genuinely draining in July and August.
