What it's actually like

Plane-tree boulevards, honey-stone fountains and Cézanne's light — Provence at its most elegant and unhurried.

Aix is the Provence of the postcards, minus the coast: a golden, fountain-splashed university town where the Cours Mirabeau runs under a canopy of plane trees, market stalls pile up lavender and melons and olives, and the whole place seems to move at the pace of an afternoon rosé. Cézanne painted the Montagne Sainte-Victoire that looms east of town over and over; you'll see why the second the light hits the stone. It's refined, moneyed and a touch bourgeois — but genuinely lovely, and made for slow days.
