Bern is the capital that acts like it isn't one. Its UNESCO old town is a near-perfect medieval survivor: six kilometres of covered sandstone arcades, painted Renaissance fountains, an astronomical clock that still draws a crowd, all cradled in a tight loop of the emerald Aare river. Einstein dreamed up relativity in a flat here. In summer, locals leap into the fast, cold Aare and float through town. It's compact, calm, ridiculously well-kept — and, being neither Zurich nor the Alps, gloriously under-touristed.
