A volcanic-rock capital of crags, closes and cold sea light — gothic drama that somehow feels cosy.

Edinburgh does atmosphere better than almost anywhere. Mist rolls off the castle rock, the Old Town's stone tenements lean over narrow closes, and a bagpipe drifts up from the Royal Mile whether you asked for it or not. Then you climb an extinct volcano in the middle of the city and the whole thing spreads out to the sea. It's grand and moody and, at street level, warm — a pub with a fire, a whisky, and someone happy to talk your ear off.
